I saw a lot of great movies last week at Fantastic Fest (check out my daily recaps), but one of my favorites was a film that hadn’t even been on my radar: Bone Tomahawk written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. A fusion between a classic western and a survival horror film, Bone Tomahawk is one of the most fun experiences I’ve had at the movies this year. It’s funny, violent, and directed with a surprising level of focus and confidence considering it was Zahler’s first time at the helm.
The above trailer does a pretty good job of capturing the western and horror elements of the film, but it completely fails to capture the comedy. Bone Tomahawk is surprisingly funny even as the violence and death ramps up to the climax of the film. I’ve been talking about this movie basically non-stop since I got home. You’ll hear me talk about it again tomorrow on The Weekly Planet. I’m doing this because it’s really good and I want you all to see it.
Check out the above trailer and then check out the film when it hits theaters on October 24th!
