What makes a good trailer? There’s a lot of different opinions on the matter, to be sure. To me, a good trailer is one that accurately describes the tone and basic setting of a film without giving too much of it away. Most trailers these days fail to do this. They either mislead on tone or give the entire plot of the film away (or sometimes both).
The above trailer for The Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar! is a nearly perfect. It gives you just enough of the movie that you understand the plot, but you still have no idea where this is going. It sets the tone of the film, classic Coen Brothers dark comedy. It showcases the impressive cast. It displays the beautiful 1950s Hollywood motif. I hadn’t even heard of this movie before I watched this and now it’s one of my most anticipated films of next year. That is the power of a good trailer.
Hail, Caesar! comes out February 14th, 2016. I can’t think of anything more perfect than a Valentine’s Day with the Coens.
