I really love to read. It’s why I started a book club that I hope all of you are excited to participate in. But I have this problem where I usually won’t approach a book series until I hear it’s being made into a movie. So I didn’t read The Hunger Games series until the first film was about to come out. I liked the first book, and some of the second, but I thought the last one was pretty terrible. One thing was clear though, this was a series that would be very easy to adapt into a pretty dumb movie.
And somehow The Hunger Games films defied those expectations. The previous three films have been legitimately great movies, building upon the source material to create something action packed, but maintaining powerful and resonant themes. Mockingjay Part 1 in particular takes a boring slog of a first half of a novel and turns in into a nuanced film about the power and role of propaganda in war. So even though I strongly disliked the book on which it was based, I’m amped up for Mockingjay Part 2.
Also because of trailers like this one. It looks great! There are cool looking monsters, weird black goop, and like 47,000 explosions. The trailer builds expertly, starting with another dramatic speech from Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss (how good is she in these films?) and spilling over into cut after cut of action sequences. It’s clear, despite the words the trailer concludes on that the games are over, that our characters are now in the middle of a full out war. It also carries with it the tone of finality. This is definitely the end for The Hunger Games series. And it’s an end you don’t want to miss.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 comes out November 20th. It’s probably gonna make a billion dollars.
