Last week, on the back of 13 Hours, the surprisingly good Michael Bay Benghazi movie, the world was shocked to find the above trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane, a new Bad Robot/J.J. Abrams movie that’s coming out in March. In true J.J. Abrams “Mystery Box” fashion, not only is the plot of the movie a complete surprise, but the movie itself is. It’s rare in this internet age that people see a trailer for the first time in a theater and not online, but Abrams managed to pull a fast one on us. With the title, this sounds like it might be a sequel to 2008’s Cloverfield, but also…maybe not?
Regardless, this trailer is really great. It starts slow with great music and some pretty mundane and happy family activities (that mirror the opening scene of Season 2 of Lost). But then suddenly it shifts tones dramatically and becomes creepy and suspenseful, ratcheting up the tension (and slowing down the music) as we reveal just how crazy John Goodman’s character is. In classic Bad Robot fashion the trailer ends just before some sort of dramatic reveal. I don’t know if this movie will be good. I don’t know if it’ll have anything to do with the original Cloverfield, but I don’t really care. With a trailer this good, I’m in on 10 Cloverfield Lane.
10 Cloverfield Lane escapes the mystery box on March 11th.
